{"id":1005,"date":"2013-07-16T00:44:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-16T00:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.com\/?p=1005"},"modified":"2013-07-16T00:44:15","modified_gmt":"2013-07-16T00:44:15","slug":"manny-and-nora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/?p=1005","title":{"rendered":"Manny and Nora"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Manny &amp; Nora:<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0 never had the opportunity to meet you in person, because you had already gone home before I came into your family.\u00a0 My family and I just spent the weekend wrapped in love in North Dakota surrounded by ninety of your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even one great-great granddaughter.\u00a0 That was only the number of those who could attend this year, and a few of your cousins and second cousins came along too!\u00a0 I had such an amazing experience (as did my whole family) that I wanted to write to you about the family reunion.\u00a0 To the Dakota prairie we all travel as if spellbound for the lure of the sacred water gently calling our names like the siren song, only in our journey we wash up in the arms of a loved one saying, \u201cI\u2019m so glad to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eighty-two years ago, the two of you were young and starting out a new life together, not knowing what legacy you would leave in this world.\u00a0 The first description of that legacy would be <b>a whole lot of family<\/b>.\u00a0 Whether by blood or marriage, we number well past one hundred and twenty-five.\u00a0 After shaking the sheer overwhelming nature of headcounts, the only thing you feel is love &#8211; that holds us all together with heaven\u2019s gossamer when we are away from this place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1007\" style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/queens-court.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1007\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1007\" alt=\"Remaining Sisters (aka Queen's Court)\" src=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/queens-court.jpg\" width=\"403\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/queens-court.jpg 403w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/queens-court-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remaining Sisters (aka Queen&#8217;s Court)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You raised a great group of kids, and your grandkids are amazingly talented people in all facets of life \u2013 hard workers and excellent parents.\u00a0 (Of course, I am pretty partial to one of your grandsons.) Your sons married wonderful wives, and your daughters are the thread that holds this family together.\u00a0\u00a0 Like the reunion t-shirts proclaimed, family is cherished here.\u00a0 Based on my personal observations as granddaughter-in-law, you raised people to love God, love each other, have fun, be lighthearted, eat and cook well, laugh heartily, enjoy life\u2019s little moments, and make music with your voice and your heart.<\/p>\n<p>I would have to write a book on the beauty of it all, but in a nutshell this is what I experienced over the weekend.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Piles and piles of rich foods (lovingly prepared, savored, and devoured) \u2013 including recipes passed down directly from you.<\/li>\n<li>More hugs than I think have ever been recorded.\u00a0 Some in greetings, some in farewells, but most, just because we were so glad to be together.<\/li>\n<li>Tears of joy and tears of sadness for all of life\u2019s miracles and heartaches.<\/li>\n<li>Laughter that had to bring joy to the heavens.<\/li>\n<li>Prairie winds, sun, and storms \u2013 which brought us together in more ways than one.<\/li>\n<li>Swapping of old stories and family lines (who is related to whom and how)<\/li>\n<li>Teenagers coming out their shells and emerging as beautiful people \u2013 ready to carry the torch of family for future generations<\/li>\n<li>Godchildren and godparents<\/li>\n<li>Healthy competitions and gentle ribbing<\/li>\n<li>Quality time spent fishing, visiting, eating, playing cards, or gathering around the campfire<\/li>\n<li>Babies and septuagenarians<\/li>\n<li>Relationships strengthened and built<\/li>\n<li>Handmade love lavished on the little ones.<\/li>\n<li>Gifts that made thousand mile journeys.<\/li>\n<li>Superheroes \u2013 those who made cabbage rolls, Ironman protecting us at supper, and who could ever forget Spiderma\u2019am<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/ironman.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1010\" alt=\"ironman\" src=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/ironman.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/ironman.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/ironman-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/spidermaam.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1013\" alt=\"spiderma'am\" src=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/spidermaam.png?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/spidermaam.png 851w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/spidermaam-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/spidermaam-624x351.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legends &#8211; best cinnamon rolls in the world, first fish caught, and jokes that never get old<\/li>\n<li>Singing around a campfire (or in a makeshift group out of the storm), but singing just to be together.<\/li>\n<li>Songs in memory, in tradition, and in tribute.<\/li>\n<li>So many pictures that we should all have eye troubles for a while<\/li>\n<li>Reunion traditions \u2013 old and new \u2013 fashion shows that rival Paris runways<\/li>\n<li>Sadness for those unable to travel and for those who have gone to join you, followed by happiness because we are cloaked in so many happy memories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1009\" style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/nowatzkis.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1009\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1009\" alt=\"A small gathering\" src=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/nowatzkis.jpg\" width=\"497\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/nowatzkis.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/nowatzkis-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/nowatzkis-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A small gathering<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We have weathered life&#8217;s journey well.\u00a0 We have sojourned through the celebrations of \u00a0births, baptisms, graduations, and weddings, mourning tragedies, deaths, and defeats.\u00a0 Together we have hated cancer, loved each other, and rejoiced in gathering.
