{"id":271,"date":"2012-07-24T03:43:35","date_gmt":"2012-07-24T03:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.com\/?p=271"},"modified":"2012-07-24T03:43:35","modified_gmt":"2012-07-24T03:43:35","slug":"confessions-of-the-zucchini-faerie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/?p=271","title":{"rendered":"Confessions of the Zucchini Faerie"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_273\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/zucchini.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-273\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-273\" title=\"zucchini\" src=\"http:\/\/kandynolesstevens.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/zucchini.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/zucchini.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/zucchini-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/zucchini-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.realsweetgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/zucchini-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One day of bounty from our garden<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As promised from yesterday&#8217;s blog, I plan to give you more insight into my history with the illustrious (at least for me) zucchini.\u00a0 For all who know me personally, I have a pretty healthy sense of humor.\u00a0\u00a0Hence, \u00a0no one in my family was surprised when while perusing for zucchini recipes I let out a serious belly laugh that resulted in tears flowing down my cheeks.\u00a0 What tickled my fancy so much\u00a0you might ask.\u00a0 While searching for a zucchini saute, I noticed a little link on the side of the page.<\/p>\n<p>When I opened it up (which I encourage you to do so &#8211; right now), I guffawed even more.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/howto\/sneak-some-zucchini-onto-your-neighbors-porch-night\/detail.aspx?msg=2#comments\">http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/howto\/sneak-some-zucchini-onto-your-neighbors-porch-night\/detail.aspx?msg=2#comments<\/a>\u00a0 I love &#8220;invented&#8221; holidays &#8211; like &#8220;Watch the Last Sunset of the Year&#8221; which is a Team Stevens family tradition;\u00a0thus &#8220;Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbors&#8217; Porch Night&#8221; was right up my alley.\u00a0 It was part good-natured fun, part <em>It&#8217;s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown<\/em> with a little mischief thrown in the mix.<\/p>\n<p>What really spoke to me about this holiday was the notion I was way ahead of my time\u00a0as a college friend and I were trailblazers in this\u00a0movement.\u00a0While reading the article, I was transported back to a night in the fall of my senior year of college.\u00a0 Both of our dads taught at the college we attended; so we made the frugal choice to live at home and save our money.\u00a0 Late one night while studying for Physical Chemistry in my friend&#8217;s basement, we heard a small voice coming from the top of the stairs.\u00a0 &#8220;Girls, could you please come up here for a moment?&#8221;\u00a0 Considering the time was already approaching 11 pm, we did not delay in our ascent upstairs.\u00a0 Upon our arrival in the family kitchen, we discovered bags cluttering the counter.\u00a0Yes!\u00a0 Bags of club sized zucchinis!\u00a0 &#8220;Girls, when you are done with your studies I would like you to kindly walk around the neighborhood and deposit these bags on the neighbors doorsteps.&#8221;\u00a0 My mind was racing &#8211; &#8220;Did I hear her correctly?&#8221; and &#8220;Is this even legal?&#8221; were the most prevalent thoughts floating around.\u00a0 Growing up in the South, I hadn&#8217;t quite embraced the Midwestern flair\u00a0for neighborly love and sharing, because I know some neighborhoods where that type of generosity would be more than frowned upon, particularly at that hour of the night.\u00a0 However being sweet college chemistry majors, we obliged the matronly request as if Mother Earth had whispered to us a siren call of sharing\u00a0her bounty from the family&#8217;s garden.\u00a0 In the chilly North Dakota darkness of a fall night, we ran with bags overflowing up and down a certain 1st street in a small town bequeathing beautiful, bountiful squash.\u00a0 Vividly, I remember the adrenaline rush of our commando mission in the crisp air and the reverberations of our giggles throughout the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>I know not everyone will embrace this holiday as much as I think I just\u00a0might.\u00a0 It has the potential to become an annual summer festival around my house.
